Man in 'serious condition' after being doused in petrol and set on fire in Cork assault

A man was set on fire during an aggravated burglary in Co. Cork overnight.

It's believed the man was doused with petrol and set alight in the vicious assault in the Mayfield area.

He was rushed to Cork University Hospital where he is currently being treated and is said to be in a serious condition as a result after receiving extensive burns and was placed in an induced coma.

Gardai in Mayfield have launched an investigation after two armed men burst into a house in the Lotamore area of Mayfield at around 4am, CorkBeo reports.

It's understood they were armed with knives and iron bars.

They are believed to have dragged the young man from his bed and and beat him severely before dousing him with petrol and setting him alight.

Two emergency services units from the Ballyvolane fire station rushed to the scene.

The men fled from the scene on the Boherboy Road in two cars as the man's family tried to quench the flames.

A garda spokesperson said: "Garda are investigating an aggravated burglary that occurred at a house in Lotamore, Co Cork shortly before 4am this morning, 20th January, 2020."

"Two men entered the house, armed with a metal object, and assaulted the occupant, a man in his 20s. He was taken to Cork University Hospital after suffering apparent burn injuries. His condition is believed to be serious.

"No arrests have been made and the investigation is ongoing."

"An incident room has been set up in Mayfield Garda Station and Gardaí are appealing for witnesses to contact them on 021 455 8510"
