Detective Sergeant Daniel Small said: “It’s vital we trace the person responsible for this violent attack and I’m appealing for information from the public.

“Were you in the area at the time and saw what happened? Do you have CCTV, doorbell or dashcam footage which has captured something of significance? If you have any information which could help, please get in touch.

“We have an increased presence in the area with officers carrying out CCTV and door-to-door inquiries. Anyone with concerns can speak to these officers.”

Roads in the area were closed while police carried out investigations, including George Street at Barr Place, Lady Lane at Argyle Street and Castle Street at Argyle Street, with local diversions in place.

Anyone with information is asked to contact police on 101 quoting reference 3208 of July 13, or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111 where anonymity can be maintained.
