Man in new, uninsured Mercedes broke down on motorway - before summoning brother to save him... in his own uninsured motor

Police probably couldn't believe their eyes when they came across this scene on the M60 last night.

On the hard shoulder, near the exit for Ashton-under-Lyne at junction 23, was a smart-looking, blue Mercedes.

In front of it - and pointing the wrong way down the anticlockwise carriageway - was a silver Peugot.

The story of how they ended up there is quite something.

The owner of the Mercedes had just bought, it but the motor down as he made his way home with the new motor.

Not only was he not insured, but he was stuck on the hard-shoulder and needed help.

So he called his brother who turned up in his Peugeot, swinging the vehicle around so the headlights were pointing at the Merc - the wrong way down the carriageway.

The Peugeot was parked half on the hard-shoulder and half on the grass verge.

But it, too, wasn't insured.

Then the cops turned up.

They seized both cars and the drivers are now facing court action.

North West Motorway Police tweeted about the M60 incident at 9.30pm yesterday (Thursdsay).

They said: "Mercedes just purchased and not insured. Driver breaks down on motorway and calls his brother who turns up in the Peugeot whilst not insured and turns car around facing wrong way on motorway.

"Both vehicles seized and drivers reported for summons."

Police found van so full of eggs it was two tonnes overweight (NWMotorwayPolice)

Motorway police see some strange sights.

Last month they stopped a van so full of eggs it was two tonnes overweight.

The motorway policing team spotted the vehicle looking suspicious near Switch Island.

When they opened up the van to see what was weighing it down, they found an unexpected cargo - pallets of eggs.

Police said the van was taken off the road and the driver issued with a fine.
