Man in hospital after train fails to stop, smashing into historic boom gates

Man in hospital after train fails to stop, smashing into historic boom gates

A man is recovering in hospital after a late-night passenger train failed to stop at the Ballarat Railway Station, west of Melbourne.

Police said the train crashed into the closed wooden crossing gates at Lydiard Street just after 11.30 on Saturday night.

There were four men on board the Ballarat-bound service: the driver, a conductor and two passengers.

The driver and a passenger were taken to hospital for observation while the conductor and another passenger were treated by paramedics at the scene.

Ballarat Base Hospital said a man in his 40s remained in hospital in a "satisfactory" condition, while another man was discharged.

Trains operating

The Road Safety Transport Authority is investigating crash and a V/Line spokesperson said safety remained its first priority.

"Trains are today operating through the area with traffic management in place," the spokesperson said.

"Services did not operate beyond Bacchus Marsh yesterday evening following the incident, with alternative transport provided."

The wooden gates are understood to have been used in Ballarat since the 1880s.
