A man who was allegedly armed with a gun has been taken to hospital with serious injuries after a lengthy standoff with police in Brisbane's south.

It is believed the man was shot by police, ending a standoff lasting almost six hours inside a business on Compton Road at Stretton.

"The man sustained serious injuries during the police response," a Queensland Police spokesperson told AAP.

Queensland Police said officers were called to a disturbance at around 1.20pm on Monday before the situation "escalated".

Police negotiators were called in at around 3pm after surrounding businesses were evacuated and an exclusion zone set up, blocking a busy Compton Road.

Emergency services vehicles were on standby at a nearby petrol station.

Police issued several warnings on social media warning motorists to avoid the area, diverting traffic at Gowan Road and Condamine Street.

The police spokesperson said the standoff ended at 7.30pm with an ambulance taking the injured man to hospital.
