Man in hospital after jumping from window of block of flats to escape fire

A man is in hospital after he jumped from the window of a block of flats to escape a fire.

Fire crews were called to the three storey apartment block on Wendon Road, in Baguley, at around 11.30pm on Friday, May 8.

The fire started in the kitchen of a second floor flat in the property.

It is understood to have involved a cooker.

One resident in the apartment reportedly jumped from a window to escape the flames.

He was taken to hospital by the North West Ambulance Service.

The extent of his injuries is unknown.

It is believed the other people living in the apartments managed to escape before firefighters arrived.

The crews extinguished the flames and brought the blaze under control.

They were at the scene for around two and a half hours.

A spokesman for Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service said: "At around 11.30pm on Friday, May 8, three fire engines from Wythenshawe and Stockport fire stations were called to reports of a fire involving a cooker in the kitchen of a second floor flat on Wendon Road, Manchester.

“Firefighters were quickly on the scene and extinguished the fire using two hose reels, six breathing apparatus, and a positive pressure ventilation fan. One casualty was conveyed to hospital by colleagues at North West Ambulance Service.

"Crews were in attendance for around for two and a half hours.”
