Man in hospital after horror HGV smash as Scots motorists face 48 mile detour due to chemical spill

A motorist has been rushed to hospital following reports of a ‘head on’ collision between two HGV motors on the A1.

Emergency services were called to the scene near Thorntonloch, in East Lothian, shortly after 10am on Thursday, August 26.

Officers locked down the scene after a large quantity of Bitumen poured over the roadway.

Drivers are being warned to expect lengthy delays as both carriageways remain closed.

Paramedics attended and took a 22-year-old man to the Edinburgh Royal Infirmary.

The extent of his injuries are not currently known.

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “Officers were called around 10.10 am to reports of a crash on the A1 near Thorntonloch involving two HGVs.

“A 22-year-old man’s been taken to the Edinburgh Royal Infirmary for treatment.

“As a result of the incident, Bitumen has spilled onto the road, and it will remain closed until the vehicles have been removed and the road has been cleared.”

A spokesman for the Scottish Ambulance Service added: “We received a call today at 1008 hours to attend a road traffic collision on the A1.

“We dispatched several resources to the scene including our special operations team. We transported one patient to Edinburgh Royal Infirmary.”
