Man in hospital after fall from M1 bridge near Wakefield

A man has been taken to hospital after falling from a bridge over the M1 .

The man, in his sixties, fell onto the embankment below the bridge over the southbound carriageway near junction 40 at Wakefield.

West Yorkshire Police and paramedics attended and the M1 was closed southbound between junction 40 and junction 41 at Carr Gate.

The man was taken to hospital for treatment. The extent of his injuries is currently unknown.

The temporary closure caused queues on the M1 back to junction 42 at Lofthouse Interchange.

The carriageway was reopened at 12.45pm.

A spokeswoman for West Yorkshire Police said: "Police were called at 11.59am to reports of a concern for safety on a bridge over the M1 southbound near junction 40.

"A male had fallen from the bridge onto the below embankment."
