A man has been taken to hospital after being shot by police in Tasmania's north-west.

About 8.30am on Sunday, police were called to a property at Shorewell Park in Burnie following reports that an armed man was acting aggressively.

Police said he was making threats and firing a weapon.

"Attempts to negotiate with the man to disarm himself were unsuccessful and, after firing at police, he was shot in the shoulder," Police Commander Debbie Williams said.

The man, 25, from the Burnie area, has not been named.

He was taken into custody and was receiving treatment at the North West Regional Hospital.

"I understand the man is in a stable condition and he will undergo surgery this afternoon," Commander Williams said on Sunday.

She said she understood the man had a shotgun.

"It was a very confronting incident for everybody involved but … no police were injured," she said.

"I'm aware that a member of the public has sustained an injury, a facial injury and … how that was sustained will form part of the investigation."

She said a house also sustained some damage, and how that happened would also be part of the investigation.

Tasmania Police Professional Standards Unit will conduct a full investigation.

Matthew Stevens was visiting his uncle who lives nearby when he said he heard about 12 shots being fired.

“There was shots fired up at the park and no sooner [do we] we look around and here he comes running through the park across the road, tries to smash the window out of the vehicle, runs up [past] the couple houses up the road here and collapses on the ground and coppers are onto him,” he said.

In 2016, a 48-year-old man armed with a knife was fatally shot by police in Burnie.

He was shot three times in the stomach and upper leg, and died later at the North West Regional Hospital.
