Man in hospital after being rescued from Rochdale Canal in Manchester city centre

A man has been taken to hospital after being pulled out of a city centre canal this evening.

Emergency services descended on Dale Street tonight following reports of a person in the water.

Witnesses reported a large number of police, fire and paramedic crews concentrated in the Dale Street car park, next to the Rochdale canal.

Police have tonight confirmed a man is now in hospital.

A Greater Manchester Police spokesman said: "At approximately 10.37pm on Sunday, 29th August Police were called to a report of a male in the canal on Dale Street, in Manchester.

"Officers attended along with GMFRS and a male was taken to hospital for assessment."

A spokesperson for GMFRS said: “At approximately 10.50pm on Sunday, 29 th August, firefighters were called to support Greater Manchester Police (GMP) at an incident on Dale Street, in Manchester, involving a person in the water.

"Fire engines from Moss Side and Salford stations, alongside the Technical Response Unit from Ashton and the Water Incident Unit from Eccles, quickly attended the scene. Fire crews remain at the scene at this time.”
