Man in hospital after being rescued from River Roch in Rochdale town centre

A man was rescued from water this morning following reports of a large emergency services presence.

Fire crews from Rochdale, the Water Incident Unit from Heywood, the turntable ladder and support from Manchester Central and the Technical Response Unit from Ashton were called to South Parade in Rochdale Town Centre this morning at 7.11am (September 10).

The man was rescued from the water of the River Roch using rope equipment and a ladder before being taken to hospital.

Crews were at the scene for one hour and fifty minutes.

A Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service (GMFRS) spokesperson said: “On the Friday 10 September at 7:11am two fire engines from Rochdale, the Water Incident Unit from Heywood, the turntable ladder and support from Manchester Central and the Technical Response Unit from Ashton attended a rescue of a person in water on South Parade in Rochdale.

“Firefighters rescued one casualty using the turntable ladder, rope systems, and short extension ladder.

"The casualty was conveyed to hospital by North West Ambulance Service.

"Crews remained in attendance for one hour and fifty minutes.”

An ambulance service spokesperson added: "I can confirm we have taken a male patient to hospital with a head injury.

"We responded to reports of a person in the water following a 999 call at 07.13. Several resources were involved, including HART (Hazardous Area Response Team)."

Greater Manchester Police have been approached for comment.
