A man is in hospital with chest injuries after being struck with a ute following an argument in northern Tasmania.

A 42-year-old man allegedly drove a Toyota Hilux intentionally at the older man about 1pm on Saturday in Devonport, striking him twice.

The pair are known to each other, police said.

The 52-year-old man was taken to Launceston General Hospital with chest injuries and remains in a stable condition.

The driver has been charged with assault and driving with a suspended licence over the incident.

He was also charged with unrelated drug offences and is expected in Devonport Magistrates Court later on Sunday.
