Man in hospital after attack in quiet Manchester backstreet

Police are investigating after a man was attacked in Cheetham Hill today.

The victim is in hospital and at the moment no motive has been established for the assault.

The incident was on a long backstreet which runs behind businesses fronting Bury New Road near Manchester city centre.

It runs near the River Irwell at one end and is an area of industrial units and commercial property but close to tower blocks in Greengate Salford.

In a statement Greater Manchester Police said: "Officers were called by the ambulance service at around 7.50am this morning to a report of an assault on Mary Street, Manchester.

"A man in his 40s was subsequently taken to hospital with injuries.

"Enquiries are ongoing and no arrests have been made."
