Man in his 80s knocked down and killed as he crossed the road

A man was knocked down and killed as he crossed the road in Walton.

The victim, in his 80s, was walking on County Road shortly after 7pm on Thursday night when he was struck by a car.

A black Volkswagon Polo reportedly struck the pedestrian before stopping at the scene and calling the emergency services.

Paramedics rushed the man to hospital a short time later but he has since sadly died from his injuries.

Road closures were put in place at the scene as Merseyside Police launched an investigation into the crash.

In a statement, a spokesperson for the force said: "We can confirm a man in his 80s has sadly died following a road traffic collision in Walton on Thursday evening (8 October).

"Just after 7pm, it was reported a black VW Polo had been in collision with a male pedestrian on County Road, near to its junction with Newark Street.

"Emergency services attended and the pedestrian was taken to hospital. Despite the efforts of paramedics and medical staff at hospital, he was sadly pronounced dead a short time later.

"Efforts are ongoing to formally identify the man and inform his next of kin.

"The driver of the Polo stopped at the scene and is assisting with police enquiries."

A section of County Road, from Queens Drive to Spellow Lane, remains closed while an examination of the scene continues.

Officers are appealing for anyone who witnessed the incident, has any information, CCTV or dashcam footage, to come forward by contacting @MerPolCC, 101 quoting reference 20000610235 or the Roads Policing Unit on 0151 777 5747.
