Man in his 70s dies following one-vehicle collision on the A689 in County Durham

A man has died after a single vehicle collision on the A689 in rural County Durham.

Police were called to a report of a collision between Frosterley and Stanhope on Thursday evening at around 8pm.

The man, who was in his 70s, was driving a van when it is believed it veered off the road.

The road was blocked off while emergency services attended the scene.

The police have since confirmed that the man was pronounced dead at the scene.

A statement from Durham Constabulary said: "A man has sadly died following a one-vehicle collision on the A689 last night (January 6).

"The man, who was in his 70s, was driving a van between Frosterley and Stanhope when it is believed it has veered off the road just after 8pm.

"Despite the best efforts of the emergency services, the man was sadly pronounced deceased at the scene.

"A report will be prepared for the coroner."
