A man is in hospital with serious injuries after an attack reportedly involving a hammer.

The horrific incident happened on Market Street in Hollingworth village, Tameside, at around 7.45pm on Thursday night.

A spokesperson for Greater Manchester Police said they were called to reports that somebody had been assaulted.

"We've made our way to the scene and located a victim," the spokesperson said.

"The victim is believed to be in his 60s.

"He's been taken to hospital."

"No arrests have been made at this stage, it's still early days.

"Inquiries are ongoing."

It has been alleged the man was attacked with a hammer, it is understood, though police are yet to confirm that detail.

The victim suffered serious injuries but his condition is not thought to be as critical as first feared.

He is now 'conscious and breathing', it is understood.

Pictures sent to the Manchester Evening News from the scene showed a wide police cordon in place on Market Street outside a pub and near to the junction with Highfield Gardens.

Officers including a dog unit were spotted combing the area for clues.

It is believed the victim was seen lying in the road being helped by bystanders before he was taken to hospital.

Anyone with information should contacted Greater Manchester Police on the non-emergency number 101 or the independent charity, Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.
