Man in his 60s attacked outside Liverpool Sainsbury's store

A man was attacked in Liverpool city centre.

The victim, in his 60s, was assaulted outside the Holiday Inn and Sainsbury's near the St John's shopping centre. The attack happened at around 9.40pm on Tuesday, September 27.

People at the scene claimed to have seen a man attacked by a "gang of kids", though Merseyside police have not confirmed this. A police cordon was put in place after the incident, as blood was spotted on the floor behind the crime scene tape.

The victim was said to have suffered a head injury and was taken to hospital to be assessed. Officers said he had since been released. An investigation into the attack was launched.

A spokesperson for the force said: "Detectives are investigating after a report of an assault of a man in Liverpool city centre last night, Tuesday 27 September. At around 9.40pm, officers were called to outside Sainsbury's on Elliot Street to reports of a man in his 60s being assaulted. He sustained a minor head injury and was assessed at hospital and released.

"The scene was stood down around 11pm and enquiries are ongoing to establish the circumstances, including CCTV. Anyone with information or who witnessed the incident is asked to contact @MerPolCC or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111 with reference 22000718126."
