Man in his 50s dies in crash between oil lorry and car in Cork

Gardai are still on the scene of a fatal road traffic incident on the R630 Whitegate to Midleton road which occurred just after 7am this morning. A man in his 50's was killed.

A car collided with a lorry delivering oil on the road towards Whitewell Cross.

Local residents raised the alarm immediately and three units of the Midleton fire service responded, along with ambulance crews and Garda.

First responders rushed to aid the male occupant of the car - but he was pronounced dead shortly afterwards.

The road remains closed between Rostellan and Whitewell Cross and diversions are expected to remain in place until crash investigators have finished their investigation.

A garda spokesperson said: "The driver of the car, a male in his 50s, was pronounced dead at the scene. He was removed to Cork University Hospital where a post mortem is due to take place at a later date.

"Forensic Collision Investigators are at the scene. The road remains closed with local diversions in place."

It's the second major road incident in less than 24-hours in Cork. Yesterday evening, a multi-vehicle crash on Carr's Hill led to five people being hospitalised - thankfully, none received serious injuries but at least two vehicles sustained serious damage.

As we move into the very busy August Bank Holiday weekend, Gardai have appealed once again to the public to exercise care and keep to the speed limits.
