Man in his 40s dies after being hit by train as tributes pour in

British Transport Police has confirmed that a man has died near a Merseyside train station.

Emergency services were called to the line near Formby at 8.28pm yesterday (Thursday).

Sadly a man was pronounced dead at the scene.

This morning British Transport Police confirmed to the ECHO that the man who died was in his 40s.

The identity of the man is not yet known but police said there are no suspicious circumstances.

Following the news of the man's death people reacted with sadness for the victim, his family and the train driver involved.

Julian Burton said: "So sorry for the person and the family also train driver, so terribly sad."

Susan Moore said: "So very sad thinking of their poor family. And the poor train driver."

Kate Heath-hart wrote: "God bless the person hit by the train. My thoughts are with the family."

Jacqui Burgess wrote: "So heart-breaking, god help this poor person and their family."

Louise Flynn said: "How sad. Thoughts for poor person hit, family, friends, and driver."

Merle Paterson wrote: "This is happening too often, very sad. Rip."

Benedict Bell said: "Very sad for the family and also to the train driver."

Earlier today a spokesperson for BTP said: "Officers were called to the line near Formby at 8.28pm yesterday (Thursday 16 September) following reports of a casualty on the tracks.

"Paramedics also attended, and sadly a man in his 40s was pronounced dead at the scene.

"The incident is not being treated as suspicious and a file will be prepared for the coroner."

Rail replacement buses were in operation yesterday evening, between Hall Road and Sounthport from around 9.30pm.

Merseyrail tweeted: "Due to a person sadly being hit by a train in the Freshfield area, services on the Southport line are disrupted.

"Trains to Southport will terminate at and start back from Hall Road.

"A rail replacement bus service is in operation between Hall Road-Southport in both directions.
