Man in his 40s charged with vandalising statue of Luke Kelly

A man in his 40s has been charged with defacing a statue of Luke Kelly in Dublin.

The iconic statue was defaced for a shocking seventh time on Sunday.

The man was arrested and detained under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act 1984 at Store Street Garda Station.

He has since been charged in relation to this incident and is due to appear before the Criminal Courts of Justice today at 10:30am.

The statue, located near the singer's birthplace, was unveiled on the 35th anniversary of his death by President Michael D Higgins in January 2019.

The statue is a 1.8m-high marble bust, with copper wire used for Kelly's trademark beard and hair.

It is one of two sculptures of the singer in Dublin city centre - the other one is located near St Stephen's Green Shopping Centre. Both these statues were vandalised last month.
