The person who died after being hit by a train near Freshfield station was a man in his 30s, police have today confirmed.
Officers from the British Transport Police were called to the Merseyrail station at around 10pm on Tuesday, following reports of a casualty on the tracks.
Paramedics also attended but the man was pronounced dead at the scene.
The incident is not being treated as suspicious and a file will be prepared for the coroner.
All Merseyrail services between Hall Road and Southport were suspended on Tuesday, before a rail replacement bus service was put in place shortly before 11pm.
Tributes have been shared on social media, with many people expressing their shock and heartbreak at the news.
Wendy Gerrard wrote: "Thinking of their family, friends and the driver. RIP."
