A man in his 30s has been arrested following an assault which left a woman fighting for her life.
The woman, who is also in her 30s, was assaulted at a residence in Arklow, County Wicklow.
A garda spokesperson said: "The man was arrested this evening and is currently detained at Wicklow Garda Station under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act, 1984.
"The injured woman remains in critical condition."
The serious assault took place at around 4.25am on Saturday morning.
The woman was brought to St Vincent's Hospital with serious injuries and is currently in a critical condition.
Gardaí are following a definite line of enquiry in connection with this assault and investigations are ongoing.
Gardaí in Wicklow are appealing for any witnesses or anyone who may have information in relation to this incident to come forward.
Officers are also appealing to any road users who may have camera footage who were travelling in the Arklow area between 4am and 5am to contact Gardaí.
