A man admitted committing racially aggravated offences in a police station.
Ashley Govier scrawled "KKK White Power" on a cell wall at Patchway Police Centre.
He also shouted racist abuse at a police officer which the officer found to be offensive.
The 26-year-old, of St Andrews Road in Avonmouth, pleaded guilty to causing racially aggravated criminal damage on April 13 last year.
He also pleaded guilty to causing racially aggravated harassment or distress.
Judge Julian Lambert, who had previously deferred sentence, was told Govier had not reoffended since.
The judge told him: "You were in a pretty poor place back then.
"The weight of the world weighed down on you.
"You were very, very ill.
"You've got to learn from this.
"No matter how ill you are you cannot loose off with filthy, racist remarks - ever.
"It will be seriously punished."
The judge handed Govier a 12-month community order in which he must carry out 13 days of rehabilitation.
Catherine Flint, prosecuting, told Bristol Crown Court Govier had been arrested for matters which were not proceeded with.
She said he told police he had ADHD and was given a book to occupy him.
But he went on to rip out pages from the book and scatter them as well as trying to flood his cell with water from the sink.
Police who went into the cell found he used soap to scrawl "KKK White Power" on the wall.
Miss Flint said: "He spat at the cell camera, which required an £80 deep clean.
"He was shouting (racist abuse).
"The officer was white but found it to be racist and offensive."
