'He was just a really top bloke': 54yo Mark Ireland dies on Warwick street, man charged with murder

A 29-year-old Warwick man has been charged with murder following investigations into the death of 54-year-old Mark Ireland.

Dwayne Watts, 29, was remanded in custody after he appeared in the Warwick Magistrates court on the murder charge and is due to appear again in December.

Police found Mr Ireland with a serious head wound after reports of a disturbance on Hope Street just before 6pm on Wednesday.

He died at the scene.

A local man, 29, was taken into custody and a crime scene was established.

Acting Detective Superintendent David Briese said there were a number of people at a house before an argument broke out, which led to a "physical altercation".

"They're definitely known to each other," he said.

"They had spent part of the day together at the home, what their actual relationship is I don't know.

"We will be alleging it was a long-bladed weapon that was used to inflict those injuries … it's something like a knife."

He said all the people at the home, as well as neighbours, were assisting police.

Friend Daniel Hager said he'd known Mr Ireland and his family for six years.

"He was a great person," he said.

"He loved his kids, loved his grandkids, it was just unfortunate what happened.

"He'd do anything for anyone.

"He was just a really top bloke."
