Man in critical condition in hospital after fire in block of flats

A man has been taken to hospital after a fire in a block of flats in Aberdare. Emergency services were called to Cynon Close, Aberdare, on Sunday, March 19, at around 10.30pm to reports of a fire. South Wales Police confirmed that a 55-year-old man was taken to hospital where he remains in a critical but stable condition.

There was a large emergency service presence including fire crews from three stations as well as two rapid response vehicles and an emergency ambulance. The patient was transported to Morriston Hospital in Swansea for further treatment.

Police confirmed there is no suspicious circumstances and officers are currently working alongside South Wales Fire and Rescue services to establish the cause of the fire.

A Welsh Ambulance Service spokesperson said: "We were called at approximately 10.35pm on Sunday, March 19, to an incident in Cynon Close, Trecynon. We deployed two rapid response vehicles, an emergency ambulance, and a duty operations manager to the scene. We were also supported by the Emergency Medical Retrieval and Transfer Service. One patient was conveyed to Morriston Hospital for further treatment."

Inspector Adam Johnson from South Wales Police said: “Police were called to Cynon Close, Aberdare, at around 10.30pm on Sunday night (March 19) following a report of a fire in a ground floor flat.

“A 55-year-old man was taken to hospital and remains in a critical but stable condition. There are no suspicious circumstances and South Wales Police is currently working alongside South Wales Fire and Rescue services to establish the cause of the fire."

A fire service spokesperson said when they arrived at the scene there was significant smoke coming from the property. A spokesperson for South Wales Fire and Rescue Service said: "At approximately 10.19pm on Sunday, March 19, 2023, we received reports of a fire in Trecynon, Aberdare.

"Crews from Merthyr, Aberdare and Hirwaun fire and rescue stations attended the scene alongside emergency service colleagues. On arrival, smoke alarms were sounding and there was significant smoke issuing from the property.

"A breathing apparatus team was deployed with one hose reel jet and rescued one person from the property. A stop message was received at approximately 11:16pm and a fire investigation took place on Monday 20 March 2023. Incidents like this serve as a reminder that working smoke alarms save lives."
