Man in 'critical condition' after incident at Shirehampton Primary School

A man suffered serious injuries and remains in a critical condition in hospital following an incident at Shirehampton Primary School.

Great Western Air Ambulance, along with police, fire, and paramedics were dispatched to the school on Friday (September 17), creating fears that the incident involved children.

Initial reports to emergency services suggested that a man was trapped in heavy machinery.

Avon Fire and Rescue freed the victim from the machinery before he was then taken to Southmead Hospital by road ambulance.

Anxious parents had been contacting the school to find out what was happening.

The school said at the time: "There has been an incident at school today in which no child has been harmed or hurt.

"Please can parents keep the phone and texting service free."

Avon and Somerset Police released an update today (Monday) on the status of the victim, who was described at the time as a middle-aged man with “serious injuries”.

A police spokesperson said today: “A man in his 50s remains in hospital in a critical condition after suffering serious injuries while operating machinery in the grounds of Shirehampton Primary School on Friday 17 September.”

The spokesperson added that an investigation is ongoing in conjunction with the Health and Safety Executive (HSE).

The HSE confirmed to Bristol Live that it is “aware of the incident and investigating”.
