Man in critical condition after e-scooter and car collide in Brisbane's south

A man is in a critical condition after his e-scooter and a car collided in South Brisbane early this morning.

Emergency services were called to the scene on Melbourne and Edmondstone streets about 5:40am.

Police say the 31-year-old male driver was travelling along Melbourne Street towards Boundary Street when his sedan collided with the e-scooter rider, who was on his way to work.

A bystander and the driver of the vehicle rendered immediate assistance to the rider before emergency services arrived at the scene.

The driver was not physically injured.

The 24-year-old rider has been transported to the Princess Alexandra Hospital with critical head injuries.

Brisbane Regional Duty Officer Acting Inspector Simon Mortimer said initial investigations indicated the e-scooter rider was not wearing a helmet.

"We would implore people on e-scooters or any type of recreational device or bicycle to be wearing a helmet," Acting Inspector Mortimer said.

"You are more likely to come out of an incident much better with wearing a helmet."

The driver of the sedan is assisting with the investigation by the Forensic Crash Unit.

Police are urging witnesses or anyone with dashcam footage to come forward.
