Man in critical condition after Darwin crash

The car was being driven by a 23 year old man who has been arrested.

A 23-year-old man is under police guard in hospital after a car crash in Palmerston overnight.

Northern Territory police said the man was driving the car when it crashed into a tree on Chung Wah Terrace in Bakewell just before 1am.

Emergency crews had to cut the roof of the car open to free a 26-year-old male passenger, who is in a serious but stable condition in hospital with serious head injuries.

The driver has been arrested for drink driving and driving dangerously.

At around midnight, a man driving a car on Smith Street in Darwin struck a 27-year-old pedestrian, throwing her 25 metres.

The vehicle — a white Nissan X-Trail with West Australian registration — did not stop at the scene, but has subsequently been located and impounded by police.

On Saturday, the driver turned himself into police.

The pedestrian is being assessed at Royal Darwin Hospital.
