BRIEF: Man, 65, critically injured in Belmont Terrace shooting

March 26--A man was critically wounded after someone walked up to his home in the Belmont Terrace neighborhood on the Northwest Side and opened fire through a window, police said.

The 65-year-old man was struck in the face and thigh and taken to Loyola University Medical Center, where he was listed in critical condition, police said.

Police were called to the house in the 8300 block of West Forest Preserve Avenue around 2:50 a.m. Officers used yellow crime tape to block off an alley next to the one-story white house. A section of the house just inside the front door was cordoned off with red tape.

Officers walked in and out of the house, searching for evidence, and interviewed several witnesses.

A man talking on a cellphone sat on a porch of a house on the other side of four-lane Forest Preserve Avenue. He watched as police officers worked the crime scene.

A few moments later, he comforted a woman whose silhouette could be seen through the window of the house behind him.

"There is enough police around here," the man said. "You're safe."

No one was reported in custody.
