Man in critical condition after being struck by car in Claremont

A pedestrian remains in a critical condition after being hit by a car on Hobart's Brooker Highway last night.

The man, believed to be in his 30s, has undergone surgery at the Royal Hobart Hospital, the results of which are yet to be confirmed.

Police say the incident occurred at approximately 8:10pm, when a red Mazda hatchback travelling south on the highway hit the pedestrian near the Abbotsfield Road on-ramp at Claremont.

The man was initially treated at the scene by members of the public before paramedics arrived.

Ambulance Tasmania dispatched multiple responders before transporting the man to hospital.

He received significant injuries to the head, chest, abdominal and legs.

The driver was also transported to hospital to be treated for facial and hand injuries.

The circumstances of the incident are currently being investigated but police believe speeding did not play a part in the crash.

The section of road where the incident occurred was unlit.

The road was closed for approximately five hours but has since been reopened.

Police are asking anyone with information to call the Police Assistance Line on 131 444.
