Man in critical condition after being hit by police car

Update: The road has now been reopened

A man is in a critical condition after being struck by a police car.

The man in his 30s was hit by a police car on the A59 Northway, in Maghull , at around 12.20am this morning.

Emergency services were called to the scene, close the Alt Park Hotel Pub, and the pedestrian was taken to hospital.

Merseyside Police said the man is in a "critical condition" while the officer involved in the crash sustained no injuries.

The incident has been referred to the IOPC for further investigation.

Following the crash road closures were put in place on both sides of the carriageway, to Switch Island, from Liverpool South to the M58.

The road closures remain in place this morning, as of 8am, and drivers are being urged to use other routes if possible.

It is not known when the road may re-open.

Arriva has also diverted its 300 and 310 services until further notice from Maghull, Liverpool Road North, Sefton Lane, Brickwall Lane & Brooms Cross Road in both directions.
