Man in critical condition after being attacked following hit and run in Patchway

A man is in a critical condition in hospital after being attacked by a driver who tried to leave the scene of a crash in Patchway yesterday (Friday, October 1).

The incident occurred on Coniston Road at around 4pm after a silver BMW collided with a stationary vehicle before mounting a pavement and hitting a sign.

Police say the driver fled the scene before attacking a 59-year-old man who tried to stop him.

The victim then fell to the ground and was taken to hospital where police say his condition remains "critical".

A 26-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of causing wounding with intent following a later incident inside the Tesco Express store on Gloucester Road which police believe is linked to the attack.

The man remains in police custody.

A spokesman for Avon and Somerset Police said: "We’re appealing for witnesses and mobile phone footage relating to an incident in Patchway, South Gloucestershire, where a man was seriously assaulted."

Anyone who witnessed the incident or has any information that could help police in their investigation should call 101 and quote reference number 5221229267.
