Man in court on Wishaw murder bid rap after two cops allegedly attacked with meat cleaver

A Wishaw man has appeared in court charged with attempting to murder two police officers.

David Dowson is also charged with possessing an offensive weapon during the alleged incident which took place in Greenfield Drive on Sunday.

The 25-year-old faced an additional charge of resisting, obstructing or hindering a police officer when he appeared in private at Hamilton Sheriff Court today.

He made no plea and was remanded in custody pending a further court appearance.

Both cops were left seriously injured after allegedly being attacked with a meat cleaver.

A 24-year-old constable suffered a serious head injury but was later released from hospital following treatment.

His colleague, aged 23, sustained serious injuries to his hand and remained in hospital awaiting surgery yesterday.

The two uniformed officers have been hailed for their bravery by local area commander Chief Inspector Mark Leonard.

He said: "Both officers were simply doing their job and suddenly found themselves dealing with an incident that was completely unexpected.

"Every police officer knows the circumstances of every incident they attend could change quickly and they are well trained to deal with this.

“However the reality of the situation requires a great amount of alertness, professionalism and bravery. I would like to praise them for that.

"I have spoken to both officers to wish them a speedy recovery and passed on our best wishes from everyone in Lanarkshire Division."
