Man in court after lorry allegedly drove into family home in East Kilbride

A man has appeared in court after a lorry was allegedly driven into a Scots family home.

Following the incident the property on Lancaster Crescent in East Kilbride was demolished after it was deemed to be unsafe.

Derek Wellington, 33, has now appeared in private at Hamilton Sheriff Court.

He is charged with culpable and reckless conduct to the danger of life as well as being accused of dangerous driving.

Prosecutors have further charged him with assault to the danger of life, threatening and abusive behaviour and breaching bail conditions.

Wellington, of Kilmarnock in Ayrshire, made no plea and was remanded in custody by Sheriff Andrew McIntyre.

He is due to make another appearance within the next eight days.

Occupants of the house - believed to be a woman and two children - had to clamber through an upstairs window to get to safety but no injuries were reported.

Neighbours in the town's Lancaster Crescent also had to be evacuated following the incident on Monday night.

Following an assessment, the neighbouring property had to be demolished amid safety fears while a probe continues to assess the condition of the other houses in the terraced block.

The Stobart Energy lorry, which was filmed striking the building twice, was discovered abandoned in a nearby Lidl car park and was later removed.

A GoFundMe page has been launched by an East Kilbride resident and has so far raised over £200 of a £2,500 target.
