Man in court after devastating fire ripped through Glasgow church

A man has appeared in court charged with setting fire to a church.

Ryan Haggerty, 25, allegedly wilfully set fire to St Simon's Parish Church in Glasgow's Partick on July 28, 2021.

Prosecutors state the fire took effect and as a result "structural damage was caused."

The buildings adjacent to the church were also said to have been evacuated.

The charge claims this included the residential property attached to it occupied at the time of the fire by 79-year-old Mary Ross.

Miss Ross is stated to belong to the Order of Notre Dame.

The fire was allegedly to the danger of Miss Ross' life.

Haggerty made no plea at a private hearing in Glasgow Sheriff Court today.

He was remanded in custody pending further examination by Sheriff Shona Gilroy.

Haggerty, of the city's Kelvinhall, will appear in court again within the next eight days.
