The woman, who was named in court as Amanda Marshall, was taken to hospital where she was initially in a critical condition, but police have now confirmed she is currently in a stable condition.

Marshall, 50, appeared at Liverpool Magistrates' Court today where he faced one charge of attempted murder.

He appeared before District Judge James Clarke this morning.

Lydia Durkin, prosecuted the case on behalf of the Crown Prosecution Service while Darren Jones represented Marshall.

No plea was entered to the charge and he was told due to the seriousness of the charge it is a matter that can only be dealt with at the crown court.

When he entered the dock Marshall, of Virginia Street, wore a grey top and grey joggers with a blue face mask.

His left wrist was in a cast and he had a patch on his right forearm.

Marshall spoke only to confirm his name and age before being remanded into custody for his crown court date.
