A man accused of stabbing his brother to death at a property in Melbourne's northwest has faced court for the first time.

Makuaj Anyuon, 29, appeared in Melbourne Magistrates Court on Monday afternoon, charged with murder and common law assault.

Police allege he killed a 36-year-old man at a Churchill Avenue property in Ascot Vale about 4am on Saturday.

Charge sheets released to the media state his alleged victim was his brother David Anyuon.

The accused killer has also been charged with assaulting another man at the property.

Details of the alleged crime were not aired in court but Anyuon's lawyer told the magistrate it was his client's first time in custody.

Anyuon also needed treatment for a cut to the back of his head and he was suffering the effects of a concussion, as well as anxiety and depression, the lawyer said.

Magistrate Stella Stuthridge remanded Anyuon in custody to a committal mention hearing in August.

Police will have 12 weeks to compile a brief of evidence against the accused.
