The incident happened on Wednesday night in Conway Road, Penlan, where there are a post office, two food stores, a fish and chip shop and a pharmacy.

Mithlesh Sharma, postmaster of Conway Post Office and shop owner of Premier stores, both at 30 Conway Road, said he took the decision to lock the doors last night after learning of the man outside.

"My staff members were scared," Mr Sharma said.

A South Wales Police spokeswoman said: "We were called to a report of a man wearing a balaclava and with a knife in Conway Road, Penlan, at 6pm yesterday.

"Officers attended and following a search of the area a 38-year-old man was later arrested on suspicion of affray and possession of an offensive weapon in Penderry Road. He remains in police custody.

"Anyone with information on this incident should contact 101 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111 quoting occurrence 2000251670."
