A man in Australia has reportedly found a 1.4kg (49 oz) gold nugget with a metal detector while wandering Western Australia’s gold fields, locals said.

A shop in Kalgoorlie shared pictures of the large nugget online, which is estimated to be worth £54,000 (A$100,000).

The man was an experienced local hobbyist, shop owner Matt Cook, told the BBC.

Some three-quarters of the gold mined in Australia is produced in and around the Kalgoorlie region.

The shop wrote in a post on Facebook: "What a monster!!
