Man impaled on fence for more than an hour before being spotted

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla._Sparks flew as rescuers used a loud power tool that nearly drowned out the repeated calls to "get a towel" as they worked feverishly early Friday to rescue a man who was impaled on an aluminum fence in Dania Beach.

It was just before 2 a.m. when Broward Sheriff Fire Rescue was called to the Villas of Harbor Isle development after a motorist spotted a "man hanging from his leg on an aluminum fence," said Battalion Chief Michael Kane.

The man told rescuers he slipped while climbing the fence and had been trapped _ with the fence impaling his leg _ for more than an hour.

It took a specialized Technical Rescue Team using special gear about 30 minutes to free the man. A portion of the fence "entered behind the man's knee and exited near his knee cap," Kane said.

The man, who is in his 30s, was taken to Broward Health Medical Center in Fort Lauderdale where surgeons were to "complete the removal of the fence from his leg," Kane said.
