Man hurled bricks and tiles from rooftops in five-hour stand-off

A man took part in an "extraordinary" five-hour stand-off with police after taking to the rooftops and hurling bricks and tiles into the street below.

Paul Rutledge, of Terrace Road, West Bank, Widnes, caused more than £5,000 worth of damage to four houses when he climbed onto a terraced row on Frederick Street on March 21 2023.

Cheshire police cordoned off the area and moved in with tactical riot gear and shields as the 31-year-old threw tiles down onto the street, damaging several vehicles parked there.

He pleaded guilty to charges of affray and criminal damage at Liverpool Crown Court today, May 23, having previously admitted to six counts of criminal damage to two roofs, a Ford Fiesta, a Peugeot, a Mercedes, and other unspecified property.

Steve Nikolich, defending, said: "(Rutledge) has got mental health issues and he appears to have been under the influence of drugs at the time. He tells me there was also a suicide attempt two weeks before this incident.

"The behaviour was unusual, it was extraordinary, it went on for five hours."

Setting a sentence date for June 23, Judge David Hale warned Rutledge: "Don't expect there to be any non-custodial outcome."
