A man in his 30s has been hospitalised overnight after fire broke out in a unit at Charlestown in the early hours.
More than 20 firefighters worked to extinguish the blaze that had engulfed one unit and was endangering three neighbouring apartments on Wakal Street where crews arrived around 1am.
Firefighters assisted two men at the scene before paramedics arrived to treat and later take one man to John Hunter Hospital.
He was in a stable condition on Tuesday morning, a spokesperson for Hunter New England Health said.
Meanwhile, fire crews were able to save the three neighbouring homes on the subdivided property from destruction. Police were called to the scene and investigations into the cause of the fire are ongoing, a spokesperson said.
