A CAMPERVAN exploded near a popular beauty spot in the Highlands over the weekend.
According to reports from the Press and Journal, the vehicle explosion occurred in the East Beach carpark in Lossiemouth on Sunday morning.
Eyewitnesses said they heard an “almighty bang” and thought someone had driven into their own van before noticing debris on the ground, including parts of a skylight.
The owner of the damaged campervan was taken to Dr Gray’s hospital in Elgin before being transferred to Aberdeen Royal Infirmary.
Its fixtures were reportedly still intact, though the back doors were blown off and bedding and other personal belongings were strewn everywhere by the impact of the blast.
The owner said the cause was a “gas explosion”, though no confirmation has yet been given by Police Scotland.
Reports say the man was “shaken” and looked as though he had “a really bad sunburn”.
A couple who had parked next to the vehicle said if the side doors had been facing their own van, “the side door would have blown off and thumped into the motorhome”.
Police officers, fire and ambulance services attended the scene within 10 minutes, and witnesses said it was “lucky” the incident happened early in the day to avoid any injuries to members of the public.
A Scottish Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson said: “We were alerted at 7.30am on Monday, 14 July, to reports of an explosion within a campervan in a car park near Church Street, Lossiemouth.
“Operations Control mobilised two fire appliances and firefighters assisted emergency service partners.
“One casualty was handed into the care of the Scottish Ambulance Service. Crews left the scene after ensuring the area was made safe.”
A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “We were called to a report of a possible gas explosion within a motorhome in a car park in the Church Street area of Lossiemouth around 7.30am on Monday, 14 July, 2025.
“A 59-year-old man was taken to Dr Gray’s Hospital in Elgin and later transferred by road to Aberdeen Royal Infirmary for treatment.
“There are not believed to be any suspicious circumstances and there is no risk to the wider public.”
