Man horrified after being charged €10.50 for bottle of cider in Irish pub

A man was left shocked after he was charged €10.50 for a bottle of cider in an Irish restaurant whilst on holiday in the west of Ireland.

The caller told RTE’s Joe Duffy that he and his family had stopped off for a bite to eat when they were left baffled by the bill.

He said: “I was recently on a break in the west of Ireland with the family. We popped in for something to eat. I don’t know if this would be the dearest bottle of cider in Ireland, but I asked for a pint bottle of Bulmers, but they were sold out. So I said give us whatever cider you have there then, and I got it anyway.

“And then at the end of the meal, we got the receipt and €10.50 they charged for a bottle of cider.”

The man said he was charged the extortionate fee for the craft 500ml bottle of cider which was named Cider Kin.

He said: “It’s a craft beer, yes, and it had on the receipt as well 'cockagee' written beside the cider. So whether they charged to open the bottle as well, I don’t know.

“Now normally, we wouldn’t say anything. We didn’t actually say anything. We just left.”

The caller said the pint was the dearest bottle of cider he had ever paid for in his life, as he usually pays around €6.50 to €7.

He said: “It would be the dearest I’ve ever paid in my life for a bottle of cider, and needless to say, now I didn’t have another one.”

To make matters worse, the family were also charged a mandatory 10 per cent tip without knowing.

The man told Joe: “We didn’t see that either until we left, and we were after leaving a tip on top of that, and it was only when we got back to where we were staying that I was looking at the receipt going god that’s shocking.”

However, the owner of the Irish brewers who produce Cider Kin joined Joe on the show to clear up the confusion over the drink.

He said: “Well, the Cider Kin probably in off licences would be probably about €4.50 a bottle.

“In restaurants and bars, it would be very slightly somewhere between €6.50 and €7.50 depending on their margins, you know.

“From listening to the show, I think there has been a mistake because you’re reading there on the receipt I see Cockagee.

“That’s the name of another cider that I have. It’s the name of an old Irish apple tree, believe it or not, and that is a champagne cider.

“It comes in half champagne bottles, and it would be a bit more expensive.”
