Man homeless after flat is overrun by 'green mould and fungus'

A man has been forced to move out of his flat after it became overrun by 'green mould and fungus'.

Joseph Conroy moved into his flat on Robson Street in Anfield in October 2018, but after two years of living in the property mould began to appear on his bedroom wall, before spreading to his kitchen and hallway. The 25-year-old, who lives in the flat alone, told the ECHO how he complained about the mould to Your Housing, who own the flat, and a damp proof course was carried out.

He said: "It got so bad that my kitchen and my bedroom had green mould. I had fungus coming through the walls.

"It's been really bad for two years. I had to wipe the walls down and even when they damp-proofed the kitchen it still got worse.

"It got that bad I had to move out the property. I'm now living out of the flat and have been since December 22."

Joseph said he is now living in between his partner's home, on friends' couches and occasionally in hotel rooms, and doesn't know when he will be able to go back to his flat.

Your Housing said it is currently carrying out work in Mr Conroy's flat, which began at the end of March and he has been provided with sustenance payments.

Joseph added: "They've only just recognised that there was something wrong after four years in the property.

"I went to a stage two complaint and I should've had a response by March 15 and didn't get it."

Aaron Hammersley, Head of Housing for Your Housing Group said: "We acknowledge that the first report of damp and mould at Mr Conroy’s property was in February 2021. We arranged for a specialist mould contractor and building surveyor to carry out a survey at the time, and mould treatment was carried out in all the affected rooms.

"We upgraded fans to improve ventilation, and Mr Conroy was shown how to use the fans correctly. There were no further reports to us until December 2022 when Mr Conroy reported a leak, which was identified to be coming from the flat above.

"Unfortunately we were unable to access Mr Conroy’s home on a number of occasions, however, we eventually repaired the leak and our specialist contractor has since carried out further extensive mould treatment works in Mr Conroy’s home.

"This work started towards the end of March, and work is continuing to ensure that all areas have been treated effectively. Our housing team has been in regular contact with Mr Conroy since last December (2022) whilst the work is being carried out.

"We have supported Mr Conroy with sustenance payments whilst he is living elsewhere with his partner, and we did offer to provide hotel accommodation, but this was declined."
