Man hit his partner's head off a wall during "difficult" time of year

A WHINHALL man assaulted his partner because he “finds December” a difficult month to deal with, a court heard.

Darnell Watson, 21, of Birniebrae, behaved in a threatening manner at his home on December 1 last year.

Watson acted aggressively towards his partner by shouting and swearing and making offensive remarks.

He then assaulted the woman by grabbing her by the hair and striking her head off a wall.

Prosecutor Flora Walsh said: “He returned home from a night out. He was shouting and swearing and calling his partner ‘a f****** w**** and a f****** s***’.

“He threw her out of the house. She re-entered and he grabbed her hair and hit her head against a wall. She also cut her lip. Police attended.”

Watson’s lawyer told Airdrie Sheriff Court: “He has no record. He was heavily intoxicated and his recollection of events is fairly limited.

“He was assaulted a number of years ago in December and finds the month a difficult one.

“He has pleaded guilty to serious charges and accepts that. His mental health issues are particularly poor at present.

“He has not been working for the best part of a year.”

Sheriff Morag Shankland told Watson: “This is a very serious offence for your first conviction.

“Your sentence is an alternative to a prison sentence.”

Watson was put on a community payback order with 18 months’ supervision.

He was also ordered to carry out 160 hours of unpaid work, reduced from 200 hours because of his early plea. Watson was told to carry out the work within nine months.
