Man hit by train still fighting for life with 'multiple severe injuries'

A man who was hit by a train in Ormskirk is still in a critical condition.

The emergency services were called out to Ormskirk station at around 10pm on Friday night following reports of somebody lying on the tracks.

The man was rushed to hospital after he suffered "multiple severe injuries" after being struck by a train.

Today a spokesperson for British Transport Police has told the ECHO that the man remained in a "critical condition in hospital."

There was a major response from the emergency services after the incident on Friday night when a man was hit by a Preston to Ormskirk Northern train on the mainline as it approached its final destination.

In a statement yesterday Northern said the train driver raised the alarm after "striking a person on the tracks near to Ormskirk station".

A spokesperson for Northern said: “Shortly before 10pm on Friday 7 May the driver of the Preston to Ormskirk service reported striking a person on the tracks near to Ormskirk station.

"“Emergency services attended and the remaining Northern service (Ormskirk to Preston) was cancelled.”

North West Ambulance Service said a number of vehicles were sent to the scene including an hazardous area response team (HART).

A spokesperson said: "We were called at 22.07 on Friday, May 7.
