A man was hit by a train at Twickenham station in south London on Friday as crowds left the nearby stadium after the opening match of the Rugby World Cup.
He was treated for head and leg injuries after officers from British Transport police found him on the tracks. They were still investigating on Friday night how he came to fall on the tracks.
Officers said that they and the London ambulance servicewere called out at around 11pm as reports came in that the man had fallen from platform three at the station. They said that he had landed on the tracks in the path of an oncoming train.
“The man was struck by the train, which was slowing down to come into the station, and suffered head and leg injuries as a result of the incident. He was removed from the track shortly after 11:20pm and is currently being treated by paramedics,” a spokesman said.
“It is unclear exactly how he came to fall on to the tracks. Officers are working to determine the full circumstances.”
Around 82,000 people, including Prince Harry and the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, attended the first game of the tournament on Friday at Twickenham stadium to see hosts England beat Fiji.
A spokeswoman for the South West Trains – Network Rail alliance said: “Services have this evening been disrupted between Twickenham and London Waterloo after a person was injured at Twickenham station.
“Our immediate thoughts are for the welfare of the person involved. We have additional staff on duty at the station and British Transport police and paramedics are on site.
“Services have resumed however delays are expected until the end of service. We’re sorry for the disruption this may cause to passengers.”
