Man hit by police car still fighting for life as new details released about horror crash

A man hit by a police car on Sunday morning is still fighting for his life.

The 39-year-old remains in a critical condition more than 36 hours after the horrific crash in Maghull .

The update on his battle for survival was released as the Independent Office for Police Conduct revealed new details about the collision.

The police watchdog said the injured man was walking across the Northway section of the A59, near the Alt Park Hotel, when he was struck by a Merseyside Police car.

A statement issued by the organisation on Monday afternoon revealed the force vehicle was responding to an incident at the time of the crash.

IOPC investigators attended the scene, which was blocked off following the 12,20am crash, on Sunday morning and have started their probe.

Officers have also met the man's family.

An IOPC spokesman said:  “We have begun an investigation after a man was struck by a Merseyside Police car in the early hours of Sunday morning.

"The 39 year-old man was crossing the A59 in Maghull at around 12.20am when the police car, which was responding to an incident, collided with him.

Boyfriend "butchered" mum-of-two because she went to her nan's funeral  

"He sustained life-threatening injuries and remains in hospital in a critical condition.

"We attended the scene and the post incident procedures and have begun gathering evidence. We have also met with the man’s family to explain our role and will continue to keep them updated.”
