Man hit by car named locally, 'nasty' M6 crash and food shortages

Good afternoon, these are the latest Liverpool ECHO headlines today.

Man, 23, who died after being hit by car named locally

A 23-year-old man who died after being hit by a car in Widnes on Sunday night has since been named locally.

The ECHO can confirm the man who died in the collision is former Widnes Vikings player Liam Walsh.

Walsh was taken to Whiston hospital after the crash but medics were unable to save him.

The Rugby League club released a statement on their website following the news.

They said: "Liam was a product of the club’s academy, working his way through every stage of the system and gaining international honours before realising his dream of representing his hometown club."

Warning as van crushed in 'nasty' M6 crash

A warning has been issued after a van was crushed today after crashing into the back of lorry on the M6.

The crash, between a van and a lorry, happened between junction 26 and junction 25 and caused lane closures and heavy traffic.

Officers have confirmed only minor injuries were reported.

The force also shared a picture of the wrecked van as a warning for drivers to observe the road.

Boris Johnson warns food shortages could last for months

The food sector has been hit with issues as the world emerges from the pandemic due to a lack of HGV drivers and soaring gas demand, as first reported by the Daily Mirror.

The Prime Minister claimed the problems were temporary, but admitted the food sector was still struggling.

There are now growing fears over the shortages in the run up to Christmas.

Johnson said: "We’re experiencing bottlenecks in all kinds of things as the world wakes up from Covid.

"It’s like everybody going back to put the kettle on at the end of a TV programme, you’re seeing huge stresses on the world supply systems.
